Why suddenly will the tap in my shower only turn part way on now?

It is a single tap, and now won't turn far enough to get hot water, just lukewarm.

The adjustment either loosened or broke inside the valve. If you know the brand and model you can look online for a repair or hire a plumber. You can try https://www.repairclinic.com/. They have repair help, schematics, and also sell parts
Could be calcium/lime build up. Do you have hard water?
If you can remove the tap, soak the parts in a 50/50 water and vinegar solution.
If you can't remove it, soak paper towels/cloths in vinegar. Form that around the handle and try to tuck it into the area where the tap moves.
It may take a while to remove the build up, so be patient.
