Check to make sure all the hinge screws are tight.
Close the door, remove the top hinge pin with a screwdriver and hammer. Lay the pin on a hard surface. Lightly rap it with the hammer. This will put a slight bend in the pin. Reinsert the pin back into the hinge. Check the door. The bent pin gives enough friction to prevent the door from moving on it's own.
Check the hinges to adjust or use a door stop. I have a few doors that hang perfectly, but when all the windows are open and a good breeze starts up, it can slam doors. I have a few decorative doorsteps to prevent this from occurring.
Use a door stop.
Our little garage door is always getting slammed shut violently by the breeze, I have the rock that my father used on his back garage door to keep it open. My mom also used antique irons to keep doors open at our rustic styled cabin when I was a kid. She kept them painted in bright colors so that nobody would stub their bare toes on them.
My hallway ends in a culdesac with 3 bedroom doors and a bathroom door. 2 of the bedroom doors and the bathroom will not stay open. So I made two cows from a print fabric and filled the bottom with sand to weight them down. For the bathroom I happen to find a small doll bathroom sink. Painted it white and glued a washer on the bottom for weight. Let your imagination run wild.
When the door is open if there is a door stop on the wall behind the door I use magnets. One on the door stop and the other on the door.
If you're trying to keep a small child from closing and locking a door, put a towel over the top of the door. That way the child is never locked into the bathroom!
Adjust door pins
Thanks
I have one bedroom door that does this. This means the door was not alighned at time of installation. So I use a doorstop wedge to keep it open when bedroom is not being used.
Holbrookr has good idea to keep child from locking you out. I had that happen when I stepped out from the kitchen to the washroom. My 3 yr old turned the lock and I could see her thru the glass panes in the door and it took me a good 15 minutes to coax her to thurn the lock to open. It never happened again as I had a key made and hid it in the wasroom. Also had a key made for the door from washroom to garage made and hid it in the garage. Never got locked out again.
