Mini blinds melt, get brittle and sunburn-
is there any way to help prevent or at least lengthen their use-ability?

I would assume the problem blinds are on the west side of the house that gets hot sun. There is a film that can EASILY be applied to the window. The film will filter out sunlight and increase the life of your mini-blinds.
try spraying them with armoral
Sun screens! It's what we use in Arizona. You'll be amazed sun/heat they block out.
