Removing panels on an oak door to insert glass.

I don't want to change the door as it matches the others in my house. The door has 6 insert panels. I would like to remove the 2 top and 2 below but leave the wood strips of wood between each panel. These strips are 3 inches wide, The panels have picture like moulding around them. Inserting the glass would let more light into my kitchen as this door leads to my laundry room which has a window. Appreciate any ideas. Dreamerj

If it were me I would call a glass company. They would have to cut the glass anyway, and since they have the tools you may as well have them cut out the panels. Even if I had the tools I wouldn't do it myself because I would want to make sure everything was cut with the precision the glass cutter will require to properly fit the glass. It really wouldn't be that expensive either. Find a glass company that does a lot of business. I have found that they would consider this a very small job and may even give you a better price. Or at least let them tell you how they want you to remove the panels.

I had my dad do this for me several years ago. He used a router to cut out the parts I wanted removed then use a small saw to get the corners. Sand the edges and stain or paint the cut edges. You can attach glass with framers diamond points or if your using chicken wire instead of glass use a staple gun.
