How to repair brick steps that have a cracked concrete landing?
We have four brick steps leading to a concrete landing with a crack through it. Any ideas for repair or resurfacing such a structure? Is there a way to reface or resurface it?

It depends on how deep the crack is, Mara. If it isn't deep, you can probably fill it an apply a thin coat of concrete over it. A deeper crack may need the attention of a professional.
I agree with Ann here -- if the crack is big, you'll need a pro to find out why it's cracking like that and repair it, otherwise it'll continue to get worse. A smaller crack is easier to repair; someone at your local home improvement store can help you find the right products.
If just the concrete landing is cracked you can fill the crack and then paint the entire surface. We did our concrete patio which was a total disaster and it looks fabulous now and has held up great through tough weather. Settling is probably the cause of the crack and then winter water freezes in the crack and expands it. So take care of the settling source first.
If your settling is not severe nor accelerating, then I would buy a plasticized concrete in a caulk tube product.
At my Home Depot they have 14 different kinds, so read the tubes and put your top 3 in the basket and read them again to narrow it down to the right product. I would get a non-sanded product that can be applied in damp conditions.
Then you can top coat the entire landing and steps with either a concrete top-coating product (trowel it on) and paint it with porch/deck paint, as concrete is porous.
Or you can put tile pavers over it (they must be frost-proof and slip-resistant).
In all processes, winter is not a good time for products to cure, as in most products are to cure at 70 degrees, unless it specifically says it will work in a lower temperature range.
You can buy concrete crack filler in a caulk tube. Concrete resurface in a tub, but the crack needs to be repaired.

Hello Mara, if it the crack is not too deep, you can fill it.
As long as your walkway isn't cracked all the way through, you can coat the slab with a concrete resurfacer, a no-shrink blend of Portland cement, sand, and polymer additives that fills divots and makes a uniform finish. Its natural color is dark gray, so buy enough to cover your entire walk. One 40-pound bag coats about 35 square feet. If you want a different color, just add a concrete tint.
Also, this is kind of cool idea! Hope you like it!
