Changing spindles, if you have them, can be quite costly. If the stairs are carpeted get new carpet or remove what is there and put down runners. If there is nice wood under the carpet, you might want to just redo that and keep it. Small decorative baskets on a few stairs would also look nice. -

depending on where the staircase is located - you can paint the stairs or stain them for a new look and also remove or replace spindles and heavy gauge wire is now popular in place of spindles - look on HGTV.com and search for ideas they have tons of them -
