Should we use rug or wood treads for the stairway inside?

We just recently moved into our first home. We are still in the process of remodeling room by room and unpacking as we go. I want to keep the cleaning to a minimum for the stairs inside but I want to be sure its safe and no one slips/trips down the stairs.
The rug from the livingroom runs up the stairs to the second floor where there is a half bath and a spare bedroom for company . A lot of people tend to use the bathroom when we have company and the main one is occupied.
New floor in kitchen/dining area. Old rug in livingroom. We are planning to expand the flooring to the livingroom and rip out the old rug.

I'm always partial for the wood over carpet. Carpet feels so dated. But definitely choose what's going to work best for you and your family! You could always go with wood and a stair runner (best of both worlds)

The best part about DIY is that if you don't like it, you can always try something else!

Thank you for your ideas. I'm leaning more towards ripping out the old and going to wood!

Hi, I’d use treated wood in the treads and Mediterranean or Moroccan tiles on the risers! It looks amazing. Please google it and you’ll see how fantastic it looks indoors. I live in a lovely bungalow so I’m trying to convert everyone to this beautiful staircas makeover. Be brave.....go for it!

Hi Tammy, sorry, no I don’t but I’ve seen them on Pinterest, Instagram and you can also google them. Moroccan or Mediterranean tiles. Good luck 🙂

One thing that may help you make a choice is the noise factor. Your stairway is literally 'walled in'. Using only wood and/or tile will look amazing but the echo of noise in such an enclosed space could be. . . bad. If you choose a floor that bounces sound, then consider hanging sound absorbing materials on a wall in the stairway. A swag or two, wreaths, a quilt, tapestry, flag - anything. Noise is subtle but it is not healthy.

Definitely go with the wood/tile combo throughout the entire if you have kidletts or pets or both, it will save you grief over countless spills, pet smells and stains as well as money in regular carpet cleaning. Enjoy your new home & have fun decorating .

I'd go with wood and get carpet treads for each stair, best of both worlds!

We just recently pulled up the carpet off our stairs - best decision ever! We installed hardwood retreads that fit right over the steps and then installed an indoor/outdoor carpet runner to reduce noise and keep the steps from being too slippery. Much easier to keep clean too!

I prefer wood rather than carpeting. Vacuuming carpeting on stairs is a pain.

Go with the wood. Carpet is dated. I removed carpeting off my stairs and refinished the wood. Glued on white laminate on the risers. Easy to clean. Initially painted the risers but dirt, bumps with shoes made them hadr to clean. You may be surprised and have construction grade lumber under the carpet. A lot of home builders did that to save a buck.

Get rid of the carpet - odour/easy clean is my reasoning. Continuing your kitchen flooring will give flow. I bought oak steps I stained dark & then used bead board (painted white enamel) on the risers, boy those steps pop - especially at night. In another house, I built the steps out (for safe width) used colorful tile on the steps, then painted the wood risers - you could use your kitchen flooring. Or install new wooden steps & paint steps & risers one colour, then paint one or more co-ordinating stripes down center from top to bottom. Just seal well with matte sealer. I loathe carpeting anywhere (make work projects by men for women LOL), never mind on stairs, so hope these ideas help.

If there is wood under the stairway rug - I would remove the rug. Then get a patterned runner installed down the center, leaving wood exposed on each side. The pattern helps to hide soil and wear. A runner is much less expensive than installed wall to wall - which is what is down at present. much easier to replace when it gets trashed. Much cleaner as well.

Tear out the carpet. On the risers I would install tile. You can purchase runners for the steps. If there is wood under the carpet, sand and stain>
