Never apply directly to a Wall. Even drywall screws into the studs. To put Vinyl tile upright you need to
1. get something it adheres easily to: Plywood, Plastic or Sheet Masonite
2. Adhere the tiles to that
3. Per necessity, apply glue at the edges of each tile until you have the backsplash effect you like
4. Either:
A. Fasten the backsplash to the studs
B. Fasten Eyehooks to the backsplash and hang it.
C. Using wire and 2 screws or 2 anchors Hang the Backsplash on the wall
D. Glue the Backsplash to the wall
Vinyl tile works with gravity not against it. Another thing to remember is that often, low cost vinyl tile if you do not glue it, relies on cleanliness and the pressure of scrubbing it to retain shape, and placement.
