Put the shingles down where you do not anything to grow and then cover with mulch. We have used them under the skirting around a manufactured home to keep anything growing there.

You will want to save a bit of the shingles to replace any that crack or have been blown off the roof.

Shingles do a great job of blocking any potential growth underneath them, found this out by accident.

Hi RS: If you're handy, you can put them on top of a bird or dog house you made :) Also, you can put them on the ground where you are trying to kill grass, or, depending on how many you have, you can donate them to your local Habitat For Humanity or even an animal rescue group that makes dog or cat shelters.
