Check out Pinterest for lots of ideas, I think doing some distressing on the piece using chalk paint would give it a nice farmhouse feel:

I have used an old Singer sewing machine table as a side table in my living room for years.

I put a thick piece of glass on top...had to buy a glass store and they

put a rounded edge on. Used for coffee for two first. Moved and later used as a desk for phone, notes, etc. Loved it.

First thing that I think about is sewing some gingham or farm style fabric into a skirt. Put elastic in the top and wrap around the base. Second option is to strip, sand, re-stain, and distress the surface. Paint and stain retailers can guide you to other options.

You can take the machine out and add the top using the frame. Our old machine was in our basement when it flooded while we were on vacation. It was ruined by the time we got home and found the mess. We took off all the wood and removed the sewing machine. My husband put a piece of Corian type counter top on top and we used it outside as a plant table for a long time, but you could put a wooden top on it and use it as a side table.
