What is the best way to repurpose 1960's formica top furniture?

I would like to repurpose two dressers that have formica tops. These dressers belonged to to me and my older brother. Later they belonged to my twins, Adam and Andy, who are 30 years old now. So as you can see these dressers are "treasures" to me. It has just been in the past year (watching DIY shows :-)) that I wanted to change the look, still realizing I could "honor" them. I just don't know where to get started. PS. If my question is chosen - I will add a picture when I go home. Thank you!
