When the asparagus comes up just cut it or break it off near the ground. Cook and eat. The "fern" will grow tall when you stop cutting, and get red "berries" on it. I've been told that is what feeds the roots, when that dies away remove it and wait for the next harvest.

I have an asparagus bed [ live in SE Indiana] once we have picked enough, [ I also let the tiny spindly growth go to seed [ fern] I leave the ferns to grow all summer [ feeds the plants for upcoming year] once they turn brown or frosts; whichever comes first, it is safe to mow them down ready to enjoy once again in the spring.

Asparagus doesn't like to compete with weeds, so try to weed around the plants and then mulch. I cut the ferns down when they become brown. I would google "growing asparagus" for your area.

My Dad & Mom had an awesome asparagus patch. (Healthy & prolific stalks.) At the end of the season, they would let it get "ferny" & seed out. In Autumn they would trim it down to about 3" tall. They would first lay down newspaper or paper feed sacks in the empty spaces between the rows of asparagus. They would cover the entire asparagus bed with straw at least 6" deep. In the Spring the asparagus will start popping up through the straw. Just leave the straw and it will start to naturally deteriorate over time. It also adds warmth & protection during the Winter. Pull any weeds or grass that grows up in the asparagus bed. Next fall - add more straw as needed.

once it dies down...it is helpful to put a mulch on top to keep the weeds down next year....there root system will expand every year so you will eventually have a nice patch.

love asparagus.I`ve had a patch for 20 years.Dont cut all the spears--leave the spindly ones to grow.If you cut all the growth through the season the roots will die.

I enjoyed reading people's comments here. I just started an asparagus bed this year. I can see it has taken hold since there are quite a few new shoots. Have never grown it before but love it and love growing all kinds of stuff. Thanks for all the comments.
