You might want to check with your local Farmers Market and see if they have annual plant shows and sales. We have those twice a year near our home in South Carolina and they are huge. All the local nurseries, greenhouses, landscapers, koi fish vendors, farmers, potters, outdoor furniture, hardscape dealers, food vendors, etc. get together in one location for 3 days. Great bargains and tremendous selections of everything flower and garden related. Ours lets you rent wagons to use for the hours (yes, hours) you are there or you can bring your own wagon. We look for to these shows in April and October. If you can't find it under Farmers Markets, try your local county extension agent.

I have often wished for a directory of good local garden centers. For starters, the Pioneer Press has this list for you: http://www.twincities.com/life/ci_20132013/list-garden-centers-gearing-up-help-your-yard

If you are looking for local plant stores, look up nurseries online in your area. I am sure there are many. Do not buy at Home Depot or any other of the big chains. Local nurseries have more experience in what will definitely grow in your area, verses what the big box stores want to try to sell. The people there will talk to you about what you want to do with your yard and how to get it looking like that. Besides, they are all small business owners who would really love your business. Try calling the local agriculture extension in your area, or the water district. They both have great ideas, and will also tell you about the plant, how to water it and to keep it at its best. Many of them also teach free classes and have sample gardens somewhere around to give you ideas. Contact your local historical society, they have many home owners on their list that offer garden tours and will be willing to help you find one. You can also call around to local landscapers and ask who they used for their plants or even real estate agents/stagers who are trying to help their clients spruce up plantings and the yards to sell the home. Ask them who they buy from. St Paul and Minneapolis are home of the home shows. Besides the help from those that are on this site, most TV shows on HGTV and the DIYNetwork are filmed in your area. Look online to the shows, go on Facebook and contact them online for advice in your area. Finally, walk around your neighborhood or one that you like, somewhere where they have a great garden, someone you see working on their yard all the time. Knock on the doors and ask them about their yard. If they did it themselves, I am sure they can tell you where they shop.
