KMS Woodworks on Dec 03, 2011that's a big pond...how are you planning to fill it...do you have a stream on your property?Helpful Reply

Kim S on Dec 03, 2011No, no stream. Hopefully rain will take care of it, lol. I need someone to tell me that I don't need a stream or that I am crazy. If you pack it with clay, won't it hold water?Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Dec 03, 2011Here in the arid west our rain is pretty thin...clay may help but a EPDM liner would definitely get the job done...but for that size it will cost a lot...Are there other example in your neck of the woods? perhaps a nearby farm where they have a stock pond?...Helpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Dec 03, 2011I 2nd Walters post. Call the local conservation office. By going natural with this pond no liner etc you may end up developing your own wet land that may in the future become something that could be an issue if you decided not to have it anymore. Also check with your insurance company if this is fairly large, There may be some restrictions that could void your insurance if its too big.Helpful Reply

Pondscapes Atlanta on Dec 04, 2011Hey there - this is Richard with Pondscapes. what you are planning needs some careful consideration. Simply digging the hole and hoping rain will fill it may not work. It is possible to get the pond to hold water without a liner, but you will need to have it constructed so it will. I am actually doing a wildlife pond next week, similar to what you are planning. I have brought in a contractor that builds these types of ponds, so you need to talk with him. i can consult depending upon what you may need. What are your plans for the area? is it going to be a fishing pond, or a koi pond? what types of plants are you wanting to grow?? Tommy Martin 770 231 8596 is the guy to dig out and compact the pond for you. I can help with most everyting else, and if you want to add sportfish to the pond i can recomment Aquatic Environmental - Greg Grimes - 770 735 3523. Greg and i went to school at UGA together - he has a Masters in Fisheries, and runs a great company helping with lake management. Hope this helps RichardHelpful Reply

Nichter's Home Services Corp on Dec 04, 2011Lots of good points have been brought up, all of which vary by region. For instance - I live on an island where it can be hard and expensive to get fire insurance for your home. A pond with a hydrant added, and a certain min amt of water will get you a discount on that policy. Legal concerns - many places require that you get a permit for a pond larger than X sq ft. Some places require engineering as well, esp when a damn is required. I have almost nothing but clay soil, so anyplace I dig will become a pond, puddle, or "vernal pool" depending on size. Where I lived in Colorado was on a gravel bed 60+ feet deep so any water always drained straight down, same most of FL where it is all sand so whether a liner is needed depends on what your soil type is - again, a soils engineer can helpHelpful Reply

Flowerscapes Garden Design & Landscaping on Dec 06, 2011I love the gazing at water! Sometimes I turn the waterfalls of just so I can see the soft smoothness of the water reflecting the flowers, trees, and sky around my pond. Mostly, I love the waterfalls because I love the sounds of water. I would love to talk to you more about your lanscape needs and desires. Here are some pics of ponds that I have designed, installed, and planted. I have used three great contractors to build and repair for my clients. I would like to recommend Nemar, and I can't remember his last name at the moment. I can give you his contact info.Helpful Reply

Pondscapes Atlanta on Mar 14, 2012Kim - i think we talked about your project a while back. i recently built a small wildlife pond - no liner. we tore out an existing swimming pool and subcontracted with a gentleman that is very knowledgable about building ponds. The finished pond has done very well, its about sixty feet by fourty feet, four feet deep. Im sure between us we can get your project taken care of. As for Allgood outdoors, i cant speak for him, but im sure he didnt follow through because your job was out of his scope of work, much as it was out of mine just a few months ago. I can take care of it now though! The picture shows the pond obviouslyHelpful Reply
