James Bryan C on Mar 24, 2013Lorna the Holes are 1/4 holes drilled in the bottom 6 inches of the bucket or can.. for a round bucket you might place 2, 3 or at most 4 plants around the bucket.. at the very bottom of the bucket along the side drill 4 holes or 16 holes along the entire bottom edge then go up about 2 inches and drill 8 holes on each side where you will have plants a total of 32 holes at 2 inch heighth.. then go up another 2 inches and drill 8 to 12 holes depending on how large a bucket you have 20 gallon can would use about 12 holes then at 6 inches from the bottom and about even with the ground drill another 4 holes this allows the water to drain slowly at various depths and encourages deeper roots that will sujbstain aplant in even the driest weather.. I watered the tomatoes at least 3 times per week some weeks were less but that is average.. but remember the more gree tomatoes you have on a plant the more water they require to ripen those tomatoes.. the end rot that most folks complain about with growing tomatoes comes from a lack of water to the plant.. while this system works great for getting the water at the roots and preventing leaf fungus and diseases.. it will utterly fail if you don't fill that bucket up at least one or twice per week.. as wih any gardening system the human factor is what counts..hope this helpsHelpful Reply
