I keep mine inside water weekly then after the frost out side it goes , 1st year I planted it in the ground , last year I just sat it on my front porch

Water it consistently. They don't like to be either too dry or too wet. If you have a place where it will be cool but get indirect light that would be best. When the chance of frost and snow is gone, set it outside on your porch in a protected area where it will get sun and rain but will not be baked. keep watering as needed. I keep mine in filtered light and they do fine. Fertilize with Miracle Grow or some other kind of balanced fertilizer. You are supposed to pinch them back to get bigger leaves at Christmas but I don't so you will have to look elsewhere for that info. Starting In the Fall, they need to be in an area that gets no light for at least 12 hours in order to get color on the leaves.

Poinsettias may be poisonous but in my 30 years of having cats I have never had them eat them. I have 3 cats that never eat my plants. Anyhow, Poinsettias love the shade under a tree (in a pot) during the growing season in your area. My poinsettia is 3 years old and I bought it for a quarter in a 4" pot half dead. It may not bloom but I do not care (and I have followed the advice of other gardeners). It has a trunk and is growing as a tree. It does not like being inside the house where humidity it low but it does not like temps below 45. Your poinsettia needs to be taken out of the foil wrapping it has and put it in a saucer, pie tin, or lid to catch any water that comes out after you water. Do NOT water with straight tap water (let the tap water sit for a day or more) and water. Do not let plant sit in water so after an hour drain the saucer. Do not let it dry out completely but if you do water it and be prepared for it to lose its leaves. Unless you have a perfect spot the poinsettia will lose its leaves and look awful. That's okay because once spring comes put it outside and pot it a pot either the same size or an inch larger and put it in the shade. Fertilize it about a month after transplanting. It will grow. Right now as a 'blooming' plant the poinsettia will be okay away from a window and in a darker room than most of your houseplants. Good luck!

Something that should be pointed out is that just because your poinsettia looses all its pretty red leaves DOES NOT mean it's dead. As a matter of fact, it's very much alive! Like most trees (yes, it's a tree), a poinsettia will loose allots leaves once a year. Just make sure to keep it watered and either re-pot it in a larger pot or in the ground. It will be beautiful year after year!

keep it in a cool dark closet, is what I've done for years, bring out to water the same day every week make sure it drains out before you put it back, don't let it sit in water.
