daphne odora in containers

Sorry I hit enter to soon. I've just purchased some Daphnes and plan to plant in containers. My question is knowing how particular they are with good drainage and soil, what would you recommend I fill my containers with? The containers are very large ceder planters. Thanks much.

Artiss, Daphne's like good drainage. If you can mix in some permatil with your soil that would be a good idea. You don't want the containers to be too large, one size larger in diameter than the pot the Daphne's are currently growing in would be ideal. I read recently that research indicates filling up the bottom of the pot with gravel is NOT the best idea. I would use a soilless mix that has some perlite, maybe coarse sand and then mix in the permatil (expanded shale) if you can find it. One of the Nurseries (several are HT people) check out the list of contractors may offer bagged soil that would work. Water thoroughly and then let them dry out between waterings. I am growing one Daphne in a pot and one in the ground, planted on a slight hill.

Thanks so much Erica. I also read about putting the gravel in the bottom but was not aware of using a smaller container, which actually works better for me than the larger ones I originally planned on. Once I get everything aligned I'll post some pics. Thanks again!
