Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Feb 10, 2012I assume your looking to paint walls that have nicotine from smoking? You need to clean the walls, and ceilings with TSP and warm water. Lots of rags and elbow grease to remove as much of this stuff as you can. Then you need to purchase zinzer primer. Ideally the oil base is best, but the latex will work as well. Put a good coat of primer on wall. Once dry then paint with color of choice. If the color is going to be a big change of what you now have, you can tint this primer so you get done faster.Helpful Reply

3po3 on Feb 10, 2012Good tips from Woodbridge. But keep in mind that the new paint will soak up cigarette odors again if people are still smoking in the house. There's no good way to avoid that smell from soaking into virtually every surface. As far as touching up walls sloppy mudding work, your best bet is touch-up mudding. It's really not that hard to fix up the mudding. I recommend picking up this book to help you learn to mud drywall: http://www.amazon.com/Drywall-Professional-Techniques-Great-Results/dp/1561589551Helpful Reply

Dan's of Central Florida, Inc. on Feb 11, 2012Also flat paint will hide things better than something like semi-gloss paint. The more gloss to the paint, the more imperfections will stand out.Helpful Reply

Peace Painting Co., Inc. on Feb 12, 2012You can also scour the walls half way smooth using a pole sander/sanding head/block sander before you start to patch. This will cut down on the amount of patching that has to be done. CPHelpful Reply

HandyANDY - Handyman & All Repairs, LLC on Feb 13, 2012HandyANDY has a smoking client that we repaint his smoking den every couple of years. We clean what we can with a light TSP solution & warm water, then prime the walls with oil-based primer before repainting with flat wall paint. We had tried repainting with a eggshell thinking we could just clean the walls but there was no way to get all of the nicotene off the walls.Helpful Reply

Veronica Ronnie Taylor on Feb 19, 2015Paint usually encapsulates the nicotine you need to use Primer and at least 2 coats of good paint. If you are using cheap paint it's not worth the effort. Home Depot has Behr paint and Lowes has Valspar or go to a Benjamin Moore Dealer. Like everyone said need to use the TSP to clean first. Good luck!!!Helpful Reply
