I was given an August Beauty Gardenia. My online research shows sun requirements from full sun on some websites

to almost full shade on other websites. What do you guys think will work best. I am in Brooks Ga.

I usually recommend that you avoid planting on the West side of your home. August Beauty seems to appreciate some shelter from the full hot afternoon sun. Remember when reading websites, they sometimes are not Heat Zone sensitive.

Awesome since the spot I wanted is in front of the porch which is on the east side of the house. The spot becomes completely covered by the roof at 2 oclock and gets no more sun the rest of the day. I see your point about the heat. Up north I guess the websites are suggesting full sun. Will no more sun after 2 be enough sun for the august beauty to thrive?

Yes, I think that will be just fine. Be sure to give her some good soil to thrive in. Don't panic if it looks like the leaves are turning a bit yellow, as that is normal for Gardenias this time of year. Happy Planting!

It sounds like you have a good spot for your August Beauty. Four Seasons makes a very good point about heat. Many plants that want full sun farther north couldn't take the full sun of the south. In addition to good soil, make sure your plant gets regular, deep watering until it gets established. Enjoy your plant!

My Gardenia bush was planted by my landscaper on the North west corner of our house in a terraced area. Thought that was a silly thing for him to do. Well, I moved it two years ago to get the full sun on the West side as well as to be able to view it from the bay windows in the kitchen. Well... that really was a silly thing for me to do. It was happiest where it was. Sometimes, we just have to walk a ways to enjoy our plants where they're the happiest.

They do not like afternoon sun out here, eventhough some tags claim full sun. Also likes shelter from cold winter winds. I love the scent of Gardenias on a mid summer's eve. Gardenias also like organic, well draining soil. You can mix 1/3 natures helper with 2/3 existing soil. Better yet, equal parts mushroom compost, Natures Helper, existing soil or top soil.
