What's this tree crust?

Douglas Hunt on May 05, 2013PM, if your hawthorn had cedar-apple rust I believe it would show up on the branches as round galls. It is also very noticeable on an infected plant's leaves: http://fruit.wisc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Apple-Flowering-Crab-Hawthorn-Juniper-Disorder-Cedar-Rust-Complex.pdfIt's possible you have cedar-quince rust, which shows up as a swelling rather than a gall. See photo here:http://hyg.ipm.illinois.edu/article.php?id=77You are lucky to not have had problems with your hedge so far, as hawthorns are known for their susceptibility to both disease and insect infestations. You should probably have the hedge on a preventative spray program even it is an organic one. If this is an extensive hedge, it may well be worth the time to have an arborist come out and take a look. You can find one certified by the International Society of Arboriculture here:http://www.isa-arbor.com/faca/findArborist.aspxGood luck.Helpful Reply

Popular Mechanics on May 09, 2013Douglas, you nailed it. My sister and I cut out all of the diseased portions and treated the hedge with an anti-fungal. We are waiting to see if the disease returns, and if so, to what degree. But we plan on treating at least twice a year and continuing to remove any affected branches if/when they appear. Thanks for your help!Helpful Reply
