Is it successfully possible to plant a dwarf orange or a Meyer Lemon outside in a zone 7b protected area for longterm?

Instead of moving them in and out I want to plant them outside and during the 5-10 nights a year that it gets below their Zone 9 tolerence put a patio heater in their area.

David, I certainly can't call myself a pro in this sort of thing, bu I doubt you will have any problems with your plan. For especially cold nights, you might want to also come up with some sort of covering if there is a freeze in the forecast.

IFyou keep it small enough to have an emergency cover that fits and IF you get the cover on it in time and IF you remove the cover each day when temperatures go above freezing.....then you might have success. But most folks don't have success.

I might tempt one zone, I don't think I'd tempt two. If you're going to risk it, I would do it with a tangerine or mandarin orange, which are significantly more cold-tolerant than a lemon. Even so, temperatures below the mid-20s will kill the tree, so if you have nights in then teens you are asking a lot of a patio heater.

What type patio heater are you thinking of using? Some produce toxic fumes that might build up under a plastic covering.
