Adding peat moss to my garden beds always helps my plants. I usually mix up a large container or wheel barrow with perlite & vermiculite along with the peat moss & the dirt or enriched soil. It sounds like a great deal of trouble however, once mixed up it can be bagged & used to spruce up the plants in the ground or new plantings. This can break up the soil especially if it is mostly clay.

I keep a compost pile and add lots of compost to my garden beds. I know that it is an additional expense, but I tested the soil in several places of my yard ( 2 acres in NE PA) to determine pH etc. One of the things I add to heavy soil to improve the tilth is peat moss. Hope this helps!

What are you wanting to grow? Flowers? Veggies? What is your soil consisting of? Is it sandy or is it clay? Does it drain well, or does the water sit there when you have a heavy rain? Compost is always the best bet. If you have a mower with a bagger, then the grass clippings are a good start for a compost pile. Decomposing leaves chopped up with your mower are also great, & of course the best fertilizer is manure! Raw veggie scraps & coffee grounds, & egg shells from your kitchen mixed in will add all kinds of nutrients. If you have a local Master Gardeners program (usually run by a county "extension office" of a state university,) they're the ones to go to for help. They answer questions & give advice for free, and for a nominal fee, you can take the MG courses. You can doooo it!

Unless you have really sandy soil, be sure to include perlite or vermiculite to give your soil some aeration.
