Jessica Dunkle on May 21, 2013Last year, we had the same problem! We chopped our tree down to about 4 feet tall and it looks great this year! It is finally growing in a nice direction and the flowers are beautiful! Best of luck to you :)Helpful Reply

Douglas Hunt on May 22, 2013Your lilac may benefit from a renewal pruning, and you can cut it back even more than Jessica suggests. See these suggestions from Colorado State: http://www.colostate.edu/Depts/CoopExt/4DMG/Trees/Shrubs/lilacs.htmHelpful Reply

Vicky on May 27, 2013we also have 40 year old rose bushes we have a climber and a salmon color bush, they do not produce much either. I had read that coffee grounds, egg shells and banana peels, help the soil so I have raked up the soil around them and mixed some in.... I did note that the roots are starting to come out of the dirt. should I just cover them with potting soil??? how far should I cover. I know some plants like to sit higher just not sure..... my mother planted the roses but she never did anything further like me she was not a gardener I do not wish to loose themHelpful Reply
