Midwest Blooming Flowers

Douglas Hunt on Mar 26, 2012Rather than get rid of all your irises, Lisa, I suggest you plant some companions that will bloom at different times. As you noted, the foliage of irises can provide wonderful architectural accents in a perennial border even when the irises are not in bloom. Nepeta blooms almost forever and would look great with your irises. Other long-bloomers: achillea, or yarrow; echinacea, or coneflower; any of the true geraniums; monarda (which is also the best hummingbird attractor I know); tall garden phlox (seek out mildew-resistant cultivars like "David" and "Eva Cullum", and, of course, rudbeckia, or black-eyed susan.Helpful Reply

Lisa S on Mar 26, 2012I might leave some, but they are planted so close & Im not sure but I think they might multiply. Whoever did out entire yard planted everything front & sides on top of each other so we have no choice but to remove stuff. They must have planted stuff small & not realized that it was going to, ya know, grow! Lol! I'll check into your suggestions though - Thanks!!Helpful Reply

Douglas Hunt on Mar 27, 2012It's very easy to want instant gratification and not leave plants the room they need to grow. I'm sure your neighbors would be happy to take some of your extras off you hands when you start digging up the excess.Helpful Reply
