I think you have your answer right there - many hardwoods are great for pets! Solid wood can be sanded and refinished if the scratches get too severe. And, depending on the room, tile is also a great option.

not cork...we love our soft warm cork floors but have been warned about pets and their claws :-(

I have dogs and cats. I also do house cleanings for a living. Hard wood is good but can become scratched if not properly sealed. I love my pergo floor, I also have  the cats room done in a vinyl floor(high quality), that works great also. Both of these have low maintainance  and come in a variety of colors and styles.

I would use very good quality vinyl floor with a high non slip number. Plank vinyl or tile shaped vinyl would be a good idea, so you can buy a few extra for any damage. Tiles can be slippery for dogs who run about.
