my Gardenia is so tall ( almost to the top of house) & the limbs are so heavy...can I cut it back & when is best time to do it?

I am guessing you have an August Beauty Gardenia if it is that tall. I would allow it to bloom, then after the blooms are spent go ahead and whack it back. What does the bottom part look like? Is it bare?

Wow that is BIG! There is a couple of ways you can go about this. The first is to give it a radical cut at about 3 ft and see if anything comes back (chance of losing the entire shrub). Or you can cut it about 3 ft down from the top of the plant, then in a year or so do it again at about 1/2 the plant height. You could also do some selective branch pruning, taking off only the ones that are falling over, but you might end up with a lopsided bush. Tough decision there.

I have the same bush problem. I haven't trimmed it back in 25 years. ? I didn't know that I should trim it back. The leaves and flowers are both smaller for the last several years. How do I treat this problem??

I have three like this in my yard. I usually do trim after it quits blooming, but not every year. I love them and they could never get too big for me.

Trim only by 1/3 each year after it stops blooming, until it is the size you want it. Should not cut any plant back by more than 1/3.

Gee. Wish I had your problem. Love gardenias! Unfortunately, not an option in hot Iowa.

Thanks for posting your question ... my neighbor has one and I'm jealous! She's a Sweetie, she gives me weekly blooms. I'm saving the tips on how to trim it when I finally get my own. Enjoy.
