What are some original, repurposing, ideas for closing in the bottom of a deck that sits about 5 feet off the ground?

KMS Woodworks on May 24, 2012cedar "picket" fencing comes in basic 6 foot high pieces...you could "fence" it in. depending on how the decks structure is configured you may not need to many "post" or railing parts.Helpful Reply

Melissa K on May 24, 2012Thanks. Does the bottom portions particularly need an open-work structure or can I close it in? This sounds interesting...Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on May 25, 2012The only reason would be for inspections or periodic maintenance issues. Most people never to any kind of maintenance to the "framing" of a deck. Some keep them stained for cosmetic issues. Your 'fence" would take care of the cosmetic side. The railing on my deck is "bolted" instead of lag screwed (which is by far a better way) every few years or so I may tighten these bolts. We get hundred mile per hour winds during the winter and over time this can effect the rails.Helpful Reply

Kathie S on May 25, 2012I cut lattice about 2 1/2 ft x 8, painted white and attached all around perimeter inside the deck. In one corner i put 2 pieces of lattice on end standinding up to make the corner. (my kids used to call this spot my jc penney crner cause they said it looked like it came from a catalog). * EVERY holiday i dress up the little corner for the upcoming holiday even run lights thru the lattice and put a christmas tree in that corner for christmas holiday. My kids liked it so much that they would sleep out on the deck for christmas eve (we cover the deck every year with 12 ply clear plastic and deat it if we go out there). Kids are grown now, but grandbabies will help in my "catalog" decorating now. ;-)Helpful Reply

Kathie S on May 25, 2012We painted matching lattice, attached metal screen to back of it, facing under deck, (so no critters take up residency), and enclosed bottom of deck. We hinged one section to gain entry for storage under deck, and planted yucca's 1 ft away from lattice about every 3 feet except where we put entry door.Helpful Reply

Melissa K on May 29, 2012Vinyl lattice is what the dog chased the cat through and did a lot of damage a lot of times. Still ponderingHelpful Reply

Melissa K on May 29, 2012To add clarity, they did not break the lattice, I still have those. But they kept breaking it loose, then started tunneling under.Helpful Reply

Rogers_cheryl on Oct 07, 2014What about goat fencing in heavy gauge. I am thinking of doing our deck railing with it.Helpful Reply

Debra on Oct 07, 2014If you use that PCV lattice, the dogs won't run through that. It's pretty strong.Helpful Reply

Wanda sinnema on Nov 20, 2015my dad framed his in, same as the house, added a door painted it to match the house.. used it for storage much like a cold frame for vegs and stored garden tools and misc. Handy to have things closer than the garage for quick weeding or pruning..Helpful Reply

Wanda sinnema on Nov 20, 2015another idea would be chicken wire behind the lattice, It could be buried down a bit in the soil to keep the dogs from digging. I'd add a diagonal support, from post to post,, staple the wire to it, then the lattice over it..as for the pets.. I'd sprinkle a bit of cayanne pepper, hottest one you can find (look in bulk foods) around any area you don't want them to dig.. It gets on their paws they lick it.. won't dig there anymore.. works for cats in the flowerbeds and gardens too..Helpful Reply

Shelli Barnes on Feb 12, 2016I have used pre-made 8' picket fence sections and it was not only cute but practical! You can usually find it online at Lowe's or Home Depot. We have shih tzu, small sized dogs, and currently we're using the plastic lattice 4x8' sheets, it has worked great for them for 2 yrs. so far so good. Best of luck to you :) http://www.homedepot.com/p/Incense-Cedar-French-Gothic-Fence-Panel-Common-3-5-ft-x-8-ft-Actual-0-625-in-x-3-5-in-x-96-0-in-63665/100011709Helpful Reply
