I have two big pots of basil that are getting all sorts of chewed up by bugs.... would adding a pot of mums help? Or does that trick only work for things planted in the ground? Help! :)

Jill on Jul 12, 2013You can try planting other things too besides mums. I grow all my herbs in pots outside and also plant garlic, chives or small green onion in with them. It keeps the bugs at bay and then I have all I need planted together.Helpful Reply

Stephanie (Sandpaper & Glue) on Jul 12, 2013that's so funny-- I had chives out there too and then moved them into the ground & that's when they started getting eaten. I didn't even make the connection!!Helpful Reply

Douglas Hunt on Jul 13, 2013I don't think insects know whether plants are in pots or in the ground. To the extent that other plants provide defenses, all that matters is that they are close by.Helpful Reply
