I want to redo my popcorn ceilings

John Grimley on Jul 05, 2016I think I'm correct in saying that what you call 'popcorn ceiling', we (in the UK) call Artex. Artex being the manufacturer & now the general term for the textured coating made from some sort of chalky powder. I've used three methods. Steam walpaper stripper - to soften the textured coating helping it to peel off. Skimming - using similar product or even plaster to cover over the pattern (this is OK if the texture is sound and not dropping off of it's own accord! Apply new boards over the existing surface - use long plasterboard screws to ensure it is firmly secured. Alternatively, rip down the old, reboard & surface as you wish.Helpful Reply

Great Nan on Jul 05, 2016If it hasn't had paint on top of it a metal scrapper will remove it. If it has been painted you would have to spray water, wait a minute or two and then scrap.Helpful Reply

Petra Sacco on Jul 12, 2016I actually did this to my popcorn ceilings....:-). These are wood wall paneling planks, that I got at the Home Depot and stained them and put on a coat of clear polyurethane lacquer. The beams are fake and made from the same type of panels, that are glued to a styrofoam, because real beam would be too heavy and impossible to hold up to the ceiling.Helpful Reply
