How to get rid of unwanted weeds

I have some weeds that were neglected and have now grown into small "trees". Their stems are to thick for me to cut thru. I have tried cutting them back down to the ground, but can't completely get rid of them. Is there something I can use on them to kill them for good?

20% vinegar will kill the weeds. Just don't get it on the plants, flowers, grasses you don't want killed.

Do I pour all of it on one plant/tree?

You want to spray the foliage with the vinegar, Amy. Make sure you do not get any on nearby plants.

Will spraying the leaves also stop the stem or "trunk" from growing? Or do I need to do something different for that part?
