After you use the weedkiller, put down mulch, or rocks, or I just use cardboard (the brown side, no writing facing upwards) and then add Preen Weed Preventer - the one without the "feed" in it. You can't use weedkiller once and never get any grass or weeds... first, a lot of grass spreads by rhizomes (under the soil after the weed killer gets washed away or fades) and dandelions have massive delivery systems and HORRIBLE roots. Pull the dandelions with ALL of the root, then put the Preen down (if the weed killer isn't killing the dandelions).
DRY 20 Mule Team Borax ( from the laundry section ), swept into the cracks... should last all season... but anything that only kills the top green growth will have to be reapplied as soon as you see new growth. Keep the 'green' cut away and eventually the roots will die from lack of nourishment provided by the leaves. There is a ROUNDUP 365 -- but be very careful with it ... isn't discriminatory ... will kill anything it touches.
So many of these methods are ineffective. You can spray a weed killer. if you are against spraying, you can wet down the entire area and cover it with a cheap clear plastic painter's tarp from the big box stores.
Pull back and moist this occasionaly. The sun acts to bake these and kill them.
Boiling water worked for me. Weeds may come back, but another application of boiling water takes care of them for at least a couple of months.
