The Garden Frog with C Renee on Sep 01, 2013Prep is the key. Thoroughly clean the cabinets, remove all the hardware and doors, lightly sand. As for paint- Zinsser primer made specifically for this application. If you are going to paint white go with a good white semi gloss so you have clean-ability~ I have used Valspar and Behr paints and both are good products. Painting with a good brush and thin applications and do not try to rush the drying process. I have heard and never tried chalk paint for the primer (painted but not tried for primer). The recipe is 3cups paint, 1 cup plaster of paris, 1/4 cup water. good luck!Helpful Reply

Jeffrey Whitmer on Sep 03, 2013There is a 50 dollar gallon XIM primer works better than ANYTHING else I've used in over 30 years. Amazing what they formulate these days.Helpful Reply

Patricia Presto/On The Surface on Sep 03, 2013Yes to all that Renee mentioned about prep. Everyone does it in their own way, but it is key regardless. I used an oil based Kilz primer on cabinets I recently painted. I applied Aura paint (Ben Moore) for the next step - and it was a success going dark to white. :-) Aura seemed to dry down like an oil, which I really liked. Good luck! :-)Helpful Reply

Cyndi on Sep 03, 2013The key is in the prep work. Going dark to light needs a good primer. I used an oil based primer then painted with a good latex semi gloss paint. Good luck.Helpful Reply
