Building a Front Porch - Wall Thickness Question

We're in the process of building a wrap-around front porch. It's 8' deep and the outside short wall will be 34-36 inches tall. Does anyone know how thick that wall should be? The posts are 6", but when they're faced with the 1x8s, they will be 7+ inches x 7+. What is a good depth for the short wall between the posts? Above all, I want it to be stable. Any ideas? I'm assuming that with the siding on it, the wall should be flush with the porch posts. Right? (This may seem like a really stupid question. Sorry)
