KMS Woodworks on Oct 07, 2013Is this indeed a "needed" structural element? If not rip it out and install a stair newell post / handrail combHelpful Reply

Hamtil Construction LLC on Oct 07, 2013@Rachael - At a glance, I question the column as well. I highly doubt this is a structural support of any kind. It's not framed in that manner, and typically a stairwell will have a double joist along the opening (above your column) which is meant to carry the load. You might want to investigate it further and verify it's purpose.Helpful Reply

Jean DeSavage on Oct 19, 2013If you do have to keep something there for support, you could build a wall to wall bookcase or closet to put treasures or books in it, or you could have a closet for coats, etc.Helpful Reply

Barbara Valenti on Sep 14, 2015You could paint it whatever color and stencil a vine with some flowers or decor of your choice. Add some plastic vines and lights. Or just a plain round column.Helpful Reply

Ajc on Apr 21, 2016I wonder if the column needs to look like it's something more - could be the end support for shelves or just a table for catching those car keys or mail. If you aren't too formal in your designing, you could make an open wood strip shelf for the bottom to house boots, shoes, with a plastic tray for drips. Keep this off the floor, high enough to vacuum under. You could add hooks for sports stuff or back packs on the wall side.... The shelves could extend all the way up toward the ceiling and also serve as a banister of sort for the stairs. I love the idea of baskets or boxes for the stuff you need: envelopes, paper, stamps; mail basket until you can sort; waste basket under for tossing jumk mail right away; toys for the car; buy one nice long narrow framed mirror for the final check going out the door; You've got electric on the wall, so you could add a wall lamp. The possibilities are endless!! For me - I never have enough storage that goes vertically. I could go on and on... Good luck. OR how about the support used for a bench for putting boot/shoes on and off. One basket on the bench could be for those catch all things for coming and going.Helpful Reply
