I have a small house so I store fabric in storage ottomans and I also have a bench at the end of my bed that has shelves for storage. Any piece of furniture that can be used for storage and some other purpose is the way to go when you need to put things away.
I find a file drawer that I can stand fabric up in makes it easy to see at a glance what all is in there. The short two drawer type can double as or add to table top space.
Here's a great way another Hometalk user organized their fabric to take up less room: http://www.hometalk.com/diy/craft-room/craft-supply-storage/quilting-info-here-is-something-that-will-save-u-room-with-your-fabric-651116
and a site with a pictorial for this organizational method, using cardboard boards: http://www.quiltingboard.com/tutorials-f10/alaskasunshines-fabric-folding-organizing-your-quilt-room-t43871.html
This will make it easier to fit more fabric into smaller spaces. Happy quilting!
"Quilting Info"....A better way to organize your fabric!!
Wow! Am getting anxious to start the moving, organizing project. Thanks for the inspiration.
And Sally ... if all else fails, we quilters can do without a sofa if we need room for the sewing machine and ironing board! Good luck ... and seriously, the carts with drawers work well; I have a couple of those nine-block bookcases which can hold a fair amount of fabric, while allowing you to see fairly easily what you have on hand.
Ikea has these shelves I bought. I use it on it's side and stack all my fabric inside

it works amazingly well. I use it in the position it is in the second picture of the black shelves.
A CHEST OF DRAWERS WORKS WELL KEEPS EVERYTHING NEAT AND OUT OF SIGHT
A baby changing table offers a lot of storage & organization opportunities. Thread holders & other baskets & bins can be mounted on sides. Top has all kinds of storage options as do shelves. These are easy to find & usually dirt cheap. Curtains akin to valances can be mounted to shelves easily with Velcro to hide contents of shelves.
those are all good ideas,,add to your list under the bed storage tubs/units with latch lids some even have wheels
