I love my jewelry holder. It's a paper towel holder with a top/shelf. Necklaces go on the towel bar; bracelets and watches go in matching dishes from my china set on the top. Obviously, I have a lot more necklaces than wrist jewelry, and most of my silver bracelets fit in one dish, gold in another. Best part is you can paint or decorate the wooden holder any way any time.
I have collected old tie holders and have three hanging on my bedroom wall.
I have thin chains on one, mid on the next and chunky necklaces on the last one.
I can see everything at a glance, and it works really well!
For my earrings, I purchased from a hardware store a full organizer of screws.
It was stacked with 8 plastic, self lidded containers, each with 6 compartments. I emptied it and now use them to hold my small to medium sized earrings. I sort them by color and can find any pair in seconds! :)
My sister uses an over the door organizer behind her bedroom door for all her necklaces, and one on the wall behind the door for all the other stuff.
2 curtain rods on the back of the door hold all neckaces if they are hooked.
I use a folding coffee mug thing on the wall for necklaces. Kind of old fashioned thing but works well. Also use a long belt holder for necklaces and bracelets and watches. It can hang on the wall or in the closet. I too bought an empty 18 drawer plastic tool chest where I store all gold or all silver or one I use for all red, green, blue & white earrings, dressy, christian ones, real fancy, all hoops, etc.

I made an earring holder with an old frame and some ribbon: http://www.dagmarbleasdale.com/2013/05/diy-project-earring-organizer-with-a-frame-and-lace-trim/
Wood plaque, cup hooks, Rustoleum spray paint. Less than $5. If I decide I need more room, there's plenty of room to add more cup hooks.
