Personally, I think the fan light covers are ugly. I took all mine off and bought some cool looking bulbs!
You can cover the blades for a really cool effect, and you can choose a pattern that works with your decor- http://www.hometalk.com/diy/paint/furniture/ceiling-fan-make-over-3198083?expand_all_questions=1

Have fun with it, share pics when you're done!!
Ceiling fan make over.
Upgraded Ceiling Fan Light Covers
To make the fan itself look better, if it's in your bedroom, take a pillowcase to the copy center, copy it four times, cut to fit & mod podge it to the fan blade. Or pick out a pretty picture, copy it, cut out what you like and after you paint the blades, again mod podge the pic to the blades. Your border looks dated, think about pulling it down. You can buy different light covers from any home improvement center. Good luck.
I took a small shade and trimmed with rick rack (white shade with black trim) used picture wire and attached, received lots of compliments
I moved into a small house I was going for rustic. Itookdown the glass shades on the lights and replaced them with rustic cages in black absolutely love. Got them on amazon. I also replaced the glass cage around the chandilier used a wire basket upside-down from hobby lobby and s hooks to hang.
Go to a Habitat Restore. They have hundreds of light covers to be recycled. You will need to measure the width of the opening to get the correct size.
Bathroom vanity glass light shades are often interchangeable with ceiling fan lights...If you know whether it can handle the weight.
