I found that after a while fabric softener is the culprit. Cut way back on it. Think I read someplace to soak then wash them using baking soda.
If you have a dryer - try these wool dryer balls instead of fabric softener. I use a little dab of essential oil on them - I use two at a time. Love them - everything comes out smelling great, no static, and soft! https://www.amazon.com/Beautys-Softener-Hypoallergenic-Non-Toxic-Purchase/dp/B01GDUJBAK/ref=pd_lpo_121_tr_t_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=DE0F5A2BMR7V9KCS9BZC
I got this from the Turkish Towel website:
Go easy on the tumble drying.
I also started using less detergent, I use Odoban (an anti-bacterial/anti-viracidal) to supplement for cleanliness. I love tennis balls for fluffy everything. You know you family best, so these are just my suggestions.

What if u don't have a dryer??? Help!!
Use cheap white vinegar in the rinse instead of softener hang out in the nice bright sunshine.![](http://cdn-fastly.hometalk.com/resources/design/emojis/1f60e.png)
The best is a tumble dryer. If you do not have one, once it's dry, put them in a bag with tennis balls, and massages them until it's soft and supple. You can also use a public laundry with tumble dryer.
The dryer screen that the lint gets a coating from the softener and it needs to be washed besides using vinegar for rinse.
To freshen towels: Wash in hot water, detergent and 1/2 c. Ammonia. (For a large load) I use generic lemon scented and after drying my towels are soft and smell fresh. Ammonia stinks but it doesn't hurt the fabric. I have also used Dish soap and ammonia to take rust out of a silky shirt and it never hurt the fabric. I also use it on my husbands grimy t-shirts. Brightens colored fabrics also. Use less detergent also because the ammonia makes detergent lather up more.
