Planting the bulbs in pots is not enough for them to harden off. They need to be put in the ground.
They are either too wet or dry. My guess is too wet
Make sure you're using a good quality potting mix and that the pot gets plenty of drainage. Also make sure you are planting them deep enough- about 3-4 times as deep as the size of the bulb. Good luck!
Thank you!
I've always heard that they can freeze if kept above ground, especially if the soil gets really wet and freezes. Don't know for sure myself.
Plant in the fall....do not water! I always fill the hole with miracle grow then cover with original soil. Be sure your bulbs are of good quality when you buy them.
You plant your bulbs in fall so that they grow roots to last the winter. The only time that I've been able to grow bulbs in pots is i n the early spring and they do not come back with rare exception. I am in zone 5/6.
Are you sure they are dying or are they a nice meal for critters? Plant daffodils with other bulbs. Critters don't like the taste of daffodils.
Yes, thank you for your input. I now realize that.....
Thank you!!
I found out that the planters were not big enough for the bulbs. They were kept to wet then froze then thawed then refroze to many times for it to survive.
Perhaps they, in the pot, should only be put in a cold place to over winter and out of the weather so that they do not freeze from too much water, ice, snow?
Thanks!
