What can I do to keep raccoons out of my flower beds and flower pots?
Make a spray with cayenne pepper and garlic.
A well deserved spanking, and strong NO'S with stern looks lol, or... Get some mesh wire from Lowes or HD ( 2' high is all you will need)- he'll eventually get the hint! My dog does the same thing, but I am always with him and a stern Aaaat aaaa, will divert his attention but he loves the Florida geckos, and takes great delight in chasing them.
Toothpicks, bamboo skewers or anything that when he steps on it, he knows it hurts. Sometimes chicken wire laid down will deter smaller dogs, cats as they do not like the feel.
I stopped my dog from digging by putting his poop in the holes. Didn't take long before he quit.
You can build a short fence around the flower bed...
Try sprinkling some cayenne pepper around the periphery, it will keep them out, best of luck!
I had a dog that was a digger, problem solved when I had a load of sand delivered. She spent hours digging in the sand. Place a gallon of water with ammonia in it and the with lid off should keep pets away. Create a special flower bed or sand pit for your pet. Give your pet a treat when they dig in their special flower bed or sand pit you create for your pet.
Try throwing some charcoal briquettes in there. They don't care for them at all
Try adding a layer of something rough like welded wire or poultry wire. Be sure it’s secure by bending the edges at least 6 inches in to the soil all the way around. And then staking it down.
One of my dogs took great delight in digging in my flower pots. I tried pepper but she didn't mind that at all. While in HD some mousetraps caught my attention and I thought why not. Not expensive and reusable. I simply tucked them in among the plants. As the plants grow you won't be able to see them. She never got caught by them but just the sound of them snapping deterred her. It doesn't take much to set them off. Mostly a good bump of the pot will do it. Good luck. 🍀
I am following this, lol. I have Great Dane's, they jump my little fences, walk through the chicken fenceing, poop didn't deter them either. *sigh* lol
I'm curious what you ended up doing!
I don't know how big your dog is. When mine were puppys (under 18 months old), if they dog a hole I would drag out the water hose and fill it and force them to sit in it for about 2-3 minutes. After the first two holes they understood when I found them there would be this penalty. Meanwhile I have made a small 'Dig Area' and trained them to dig there by hiding treats and toys under the sand. It looks like a child's sand box. It seemed every 4-5 months the digging would start again so I would repeat the process. Now the youngest is 16 months old, a Pembroke Corgi, and she has not dug a hole anywhere on the property 2 months. The Shiba Inu is 3 years old and hasn't dug a hole for a year and a half. They love their dig area.
Try mothballs, they don't like the smell
It's problematic for you. I think you can give them different options. If your dog love the place for warming you can create a habit of using dog bed. My friend Viverous had the same problem for his Rottweiler. It's okay now for using some dog toy and specially after buying a bed for his Rottweiler.
