Without spending a ton of money, what are some ways to organize my 12 x 12 paper so that it looks neat. Right now, I have them filed in a crate (with file folders), but it doesn't fit into my book case. I purchased these plastic upright paper holders, but I'm not crazy about it. Any ideas would be appreciated.

You could DIY a box from wood (or purchase one that is the right size) and chalk paint it. Then it might actually even be a nice decor addition to your bookshelf!
Upcycled cardboard can become a great storage place for scraps as well. Here

DIY Storage Boxes From Up-cycled Cardboard Boxes
I got my small book case for paper 12 x 12 at Michael's with a coupon 50 % off or you can buy those plastic bin for $5.99
An accordion file folder holds 12 x 12 papers sorted and protected.
I have most of mine stored in plastic versions of magazine holders but fit 12 x 12 papers. All of these are now in a large storage basket I bout in AC Moore several years ago. It fits nicely on top of my shelving unit from IKEA . There was room as well for various other items for scrapbooking/ card making. Looks much tidier than just the holders plus I can get the whole lot down if I need to.
There are cardboard units for teachers/etc. that are basically box shaped with narrow horizontal shelves inside [i.e. not deep shelves]. Walmart or a teacher's supply store should have something along this line for paper storage. Otherwise try looking online for this type of storage. Have fun!
I saw somewhere, to use large pizza boxes - can be glued together, to stack - can cover in a favorite fabric or use chalk paint to neutralize the outside
Can you please post a pic of the paper and the area?
Plastic milk crate and file folders. Lay the crate on side, put card board on the bottom. Put the papers in folders and with the folded edge down slid them into the crate like you would a book into a book shelf.
I'll try.
Hoping I can attach a pic.
You're welcome. I found that placing all the file holders in the basket meant that I didn't have the 'slide' I used to get when they were on top of the shelves. I would pull one file out containing several of the colours of my scrapbook papers and the next thing they were tumbling over! This has made life easier and less messy!
Oh man, not being an expert in this area, I'm thinking of two things: 1) Lowe's sells these really cute pull out storage drawers that you screw into the shelves. You could paint the shelves a cute color to match them. The drawers could also be the right length for your files and if you had to use two shelves to have enough space you could put baskets next to the drawers to add functional and adorable storage for the things on your middle shelves. How about adding a hinged door on one shelf that folds down and will hide some things, while offering a table while the door is down. Maybe it would be good for sorting crafts and things before storing them etc... I am refinishing some shelves I got on craigslist for my laundry room and am doing some of the same ideas. It's amazing what treasures we can make from other people's trash. Not saying YOURs is trash. Just saying mine were someone elses.
oops I get that was just one thing!
