If you can hollow out the area where you want to place the plants.( I'm not sure what the tool is called but there is one that attaches to a drill!) make it deep enough so you can add soil & give the roots room to grow. I would use plants with a small root system! Might take some research but I'm sure you can find lots of info on the internet!
Hollow it out a bit, add some potting soil and plant some hardy plants. My sister in law did this with a log. She drilled several holes and planted marigolds.
