I'd say you are right...paper is paper & cardboard has less dye/ink in it than news papers...I know that the earthworms LOVE the channels in cardboard! Go for it!
Did someone recommend laying sod over a diseased lawn?
I am thinking you had better fix the diseased portion first . . . No amount of newspaper and cardboard is going to protect your new sod . . . Then you spent a bunch of money for nothing.
So here is the proper way for preparing the ground to put sod in.Step one remove existing lawn and weeds,Step two you need to put a few inches of ultra light top soil down. Step three apply Lime.Step four apply starter fertilizer.Step five lay the sod down.Step six use a roller to even the sod out.Final step water in the am and re-water when the sun goes down.Once the sod has taken only water in the AM
I agree with Janet and Naomie! FOLLOW JANET'S INSTRUCTIONS. You cannot lay sod over existing grass. The soil needs to be prepared correctly. I don't know what the newspaper or cardboard are for. Ask qu7estions where you buy the sod and they,ll help you out.
Granular lime sold in a 40 lb bag at home improvement stores, one bag covers a thousand sq feet and should be applied in a spreader with the appropriate setting.
Yes, I have...the cardboard absorbs moisture & the worms come up into the cardbard...it takes longer to decompose but is just as effective in composting diseased sod that is under it...only the healthiest of the grass will survive under the cardboard due to lack of light. The top sod will benefit from the moisture that is retained...but I think I would spread a thin layer of soil over the cardboard & wet it down before placing the new sod over it, so that the roots of the new sod can get a good grip on soil & gather moisture from the cardboard.
Hey Allyson, I’m interested in a follow up on this project, did you end up using newspapers or cardboard under the new sod? Did the sod establish? Any follow up would be appreciated, thanks!
