Wow! What a beautiful home! Did licensed contractors tell you this? If so, I would go with what they recommend. Unless there is a budget for a major reno, not quite sure . . .
I would speak to a professional on this.

There are a lot of new, modern awnings that you might be interested in. I've seen them on HGTV. Just search, "metal door awning".

A porch is always possible! Keep looking for the RIGHT contractor!! Beautiful home!
If a real roof turns out to be impossible, why not consider a pergola-like structure?
That's a split level house, just like one I used to own. We had an extra wide overhang built over the front area for a future verandah. I live in a snowy area, where we see multi-pitched roofs all over the place. I think you should consult with an architect, because I'm pretty sure it's possible to do it. Where there's a will, there's always a way.
Thank you everyone for your ideas.
A couple of ideas....
then sorry I think you have your answer.
William's link has a lot of photos of great options. I think that you could go with a pergola, too. A free standing, solid pitched roofed pergola. Probably cheaper too! Good luck! And check back in with your decision.
