I found a great way to help prevent weeds around the bottom of my rose bush. I've been collecting pecan shells and every time I have a bunch, I scatter them at the base of my rose bush. Pecan shells make excellent mulch as they don't float out when you water your plants. So, just get you a 5 lb bag of pecans, crack them, and save the shells for your rose bush. Freeze the pecans for future use. You could also put some garden block fabric around the base and then put the pecans on top which will help with the weeds also.
I keep my Mulch 5 or 6 inches deep........it keeps the weeds out!!! Sure you are goin' to see a weed or some pop up.......I make it a steady habit walkin' down to the mail box to search for weeds and give them a yank!!! My husband uses Round Up for weeds away from my bushes and flowers........maybe some help there??
Use Preen from any garden department
cut brown boxes to go around whatever you grow and it will take care of the weeds
Last year I finally broke down and cleared out all the old mulch, pulled every weed I could see and put down landscape fabric, then topped with a layer of mulch. NO WEEDS. I only get the occasional growth where the fabric meets the border. SO worth the time and effort.
