Feel like we live on an ant hill. Tried the borax and icing sugar trick, tried pouring soapy water on them all it does is kill the grass. We are also on a well so I worry about contaminating the drinking water or ruining the septic tank. Help!

I was looking for an answer that wouldn't kill the grass and this sounds like a GREAT idea . Very earth friendly. They are Carpenter ants and I tell you we must have every species living on our lawns! Every few inches you will find a new mound of sand. Hope this works as I really enjoy cucumbers and will have the skin needed. Thank again for taking the time to reply!

We had ants coming into the kitchen of our condo. I would find them on my kitchen counters. I washed the counters down with bleach and put all my supplies in plastic containers. They stopped coming.

Diatomaceous earth has a second vote from me. It also works on any creepy-crawlies (fleas on pets, cockroaches etc.) Europeans use them all the time to get rid of those kind of pests. It's safe with pets and small children to as it looks just like sand.

Not too sure where I would find that particular earth as I live in the NORTH. But I will check with our outdoor shops and see. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I have used hot pepper juice and they stay away.

The old timers used to that hot pepper juice kept away cockroaches. Just the scent of the hot peppers would send them away.

  • Have you tried flour? I had a small colony and it worked for me. I would freeze (or microwave),

the flour first to minimize the possibility of another type of infestation.

Peppermint oil works too, but that would get costly for the good quality oil.

I live in Ontario (near Niagara Falls), not too sure how far North you're located. Pet stores, co-ops (livestock supplies stores as it can be used a wormer for horses), health food stores and I've been told in pharmacies.

    Good luck!

DE, or diatomite (short for Diatomaceous earth). Diatomite is a soft sedimentary rock that comes from fossilized algae-like plants. Food-grade DE, which is what you’ll want to buy to solve your carpenter ant problem, is completely safe for children or pets. Insects cannot digest the dust properly, however, as it will dry them out and shred their bodies.
