Yes, that's a good plan & it will add material to the soil once it deteriorates! I think it would also improve the look of the garden spot as well! Happy Gardening!
Yes. In Canada we cover our plants with straw for the winter, then slide it under in the spring. Keeps weeds down. Straw down the row also helps you have something soft to kneel on when picking.
In Missouri we do the same. It is a good mulch and weed control.
