Hello! Daphnes prefer acidic soil with good drainage and shade or partial shade. Since NM gets hot you'll want to be sure to mulch well to help keep the moisture at the roots and water more often when you first plant until it gets establishe. You'll see signs of growth to know it's settling in nicely. Good luck!
Daphnes grow where you see azaleas and rhododendrons. Well drained, heavily mulched soil is important.
Thanks for the info. I was afraid that was the case so I guess I will move on to find something better for this area
