My neighbor's bamboo is boring through our cedar fence!

Several shoots have forced their way through the fence boards. They are rooting in our yard now and I don't know how to stop them or how to keep them from invading our yard. I don't want issues with my neighbor but the bamboo has destroyed the fence! PLEASE SOMEONE, HELP!

There are several things on Wiki-How but the best thing you can try now is a herbicide and continuing the dig them up. If the bamboo were newly planted, sometimes a ditch will prevent spread, but it is too late for that.
I planted Bamboo (about 10 plants ea) in two areas of my property approximately 15 years ago. One of the areas was about 10 feet from the corner of my house. Well, over the years the bamboo stalks grew tall and like you've experienced, it spread out like crazy!!! With that said......
we we decided that the bamboo near the house had to go! The roots were getting too close to the house and foundation, the leaves became a major problem as they dumped constantly in my pool! Here's what worked for us.
To start, my husband cut all the stalks down leaving about 2' of the stalk. After that he used Round Up full strength. He sprayed liberally around the base of each stalk, and too any areas he saw any "babies" trying to grow. He repeated this 3 or 4 times over a period of 2 weeks. This pretty well killed the bamboo.
Once the stumps "are dead" the fun (NOT!!) begins. Remember bamboo is a "grass", so their roots are spread out to enhance growth. A shovel and a lot of elbow grease will be needed to get rid of them.
As for your fence, the neighbors bamboo damaged/destroyed your fence (take pictures before you kill/remove the bamboo just in case........legal action is needed!), and your neighbor should pay for the repairs, and too, getting his or her bamboo under control. Good luck with your neighbor- property damage can be a dicey subject....
This is a tough problem. People plant this for a privacy screen without researching it thoroughly.
THEIR BAMBOO IS IN AN AREA WHERE NO PRIVACY IS NEEDED AND UNFORTUNATELY IS OUT OF CONTROL. THE NEIGHBOR'S ARE OLDER AND HAVE NO INTENTION OF REMOVING OR CONTAINING IT, THEY JUST LET IT GROW. WE DONT WANT ISSUES WITH THEM, BUT WE FEEL IT'S GOING TO BE HARD TO SELL...
Bamboo is one of the most invasive plants I know. I agree with the pictures, and document all that you do to stop the growth. :( Good Luck!
As a previous poster mentioned, Roundup works well. Just spray anything on your side of the fence. The herbicide will translocate down into the roots and kill whichever rhizome is sending the shoots over. You will need to keep spraying when you see any new growth. If you don't have anything planted on your side you might try a weak soil sterilant close to the fence. That should kill/retard any roots close to the fence. If your neighbor questions as to why his bamboo is looking sickly, just plead ignorance. Legally, you have the right to do anything you want to plant parts on your side of the fence. Good luck!
