get a soil sample taken first - you can do more harm than good by using the wrong nutrients, the wrong amount of nutrients than by not doing anything. Your local Agricultural Extension Agent for your county can advise you - the test is usually free.

Fertilization is done in steps. I do not know if you have restrictions but here in NY we cannot start until April .The first application is a crab grass reemergent,second is a weed and feed third is a summer guard forth is a basic turf builder and fifth is a winterizer. Again this is in NY
